Czechoslovakian boats had claimed the European titles in 1933 and 1934, with Jan Brzák-Felix a member of the winning boat in 1934, after finishing runner-up in 1933. With his new partner, Vladimír Syrovátka, he was definitely favored for a medal. The race, which had only five boats competing, was close until the final quarter of the race. The Czechs easily paddled away from the Austrians and Canadians to win the gold medal. Brzák-Felix would return after World War II to successfully defend his Olympic title in London.
