Clemens Arnold was a German field hockey goalkeeper who participated in the 2000 Olympics at Sydney. Germany beat Great Britain 4-0 to win the match for fifth place. At Athens four years later, he finally won a medal, when Germany beat Spain 4-3 after sudden death extra time in the bronze medal match.
In 1999 and 2003, Arnold won the European Championship, and also the 2001 European Indoors. He also won the Champions Trophy in 2001, and the World Championship in 2002. Arnold was on the squads that lost the Champions Trophy finals in 2000 and 2002. He won 150 international caps (including three indoor) between 1998-2004. He was a member of Germany’s Junior team from 1994-98, winning the Junior European Championship title in 1998 and placing third at the Junior World Cup in England in 1997.
Domestically, Arnold played with HC Heidelberg, Harvestehuder HC, Dürkheimer HC, and Gladbacher HTC. He helped Harvestehude win the German title in 2000. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. By profession, he became a graduated aeronautical engineer and the subject of his thesis was the construction of the Boeing 777.
