Florian Kunz was a German field hockey player who participated in the 2000 Olympics at Sydney. Germany beat Great Britain 4-0 to win the match for fifth place. At Athens in 2004 he finally won a medal, when Germany beat Spain 4-3 after sudden death extra time in the bronze medal match.
In 1995, 1999, and 2003, Kunz won the European Championship, and also the 2001 and 2006 European Indoors. He also won the Champions Trophy in 1995 and 2001, the Worlds in 2002, and the World Indoors in 2003. Kunz was on the squads that lost the Champions Trophy finals in 1994 and 2000. Kunz played 247 international matches (including 19 indoor), scoring 98 goals (17 indoor) from 1999-2004. In 2001, he was name World Field Hockey Player of the Year.
Domestically, Kunz played with Gladbacher HTC and helped them win the German title in 2002, and the German Cup in 1996 and 2000. In 1997, he was on the squad that won the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Kunz was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. By profession, he became a real estate investor and developer.
