Danish painter Folmer Bonnén went to the Zahrtmann School from 1906-08 and débuted in 1907 at the Artists’ Autumn Exhibition. In 1909 he co-founded the artist group De Tretten (The Thirteen). Beginning in 1918 he managed a private painting school. Bonnén painted with strong and bold colouring, later changing his palette in line with agitating for a national art. He experimented with fresco and invented a new technique in which casein colours were painted on the cement. During World War II, Bonnén agitated for a national art and worked for the Danish Nazi Party’s newspaper. He also performed as a tenor and wrote poetry. Danish sources give the title of the Olympic submitted work as “Tovtrækkende drenge” (“Tug-of-War Boys”), dated 1924.
