Angelo Jank

Born in München, painter Angelo Jank studied in his native city and also exhibited there. From 1899-1907 he was employed as a teacher at the Female Artists Academy. In 1905, he painted murals in the München Palace of Justice and three monumental history paintings for the plenary hall of the Reichstag. After severe criticism, however, the latter was banished to the writing room. In 1907 he was appointed professor of the Academy of Fine Arts and beginning in 1922, Jank taught in the animal painting department. After creating initially romanticizing illustrations, he started participating in the exhibitions of the München Secession in 1896. He was known primarily as a painter of animals with an impressionistic character and as an enthusiastic horseman and hunter especially horses and riders in movement. His wife was Baroness Anna von Thüngen (1878-1954).
