Japanese painter Ritsudo Kobayashi was born in Tokyo and studied under Shoko Kawasaki. He became a very competent painter with an eye for a very delicate image, particularly painting birds and flowers. Kobayashi was a member of Japanese Artists’ Association (Nihonga-kai) for some time and was awarded several prizes for his work at various official exhibitions (e.g. Bunten). Besides hanging scrolls, he left a lot of miniature works. The original Japanese title of his 1936 entry, Yukigassen, actually means “snowball fight”. Part of this painting appears in the background of a photo of the Japanese hall at the art exhibition in Berlin.
