Albert Simon

Luxembourgian Albert Simon belonged to the well-known pioneers who wrote in the first satirical newspapers of the 19th century. He was considered a forefather of Luxembourg caricature. As the first professional cartoonist, he created a work of perhaps 13,000 drawings. Simon primarily drew caricatures in the magazine AZ and his own comedy newspaper De Peck Villchen, often mocking the common people – sleepy roadmen and nagging xanthippes – and occasionally the noble lords.

The highlight of Simon’s work as a political cartoonist was his antifascist caricatures. After his studies at a Craft School in his home country and the Academy in München, he first worked for the satirical newspaper De Gukuk, and was then hired by the Tageblatt in 1931 as an editorial cartoonist. From April 1931 until the German invasion in 1940 Simon daily created a political cartoon for the title page of the socialist labor union newspaper. Sentenced to death by the Germans for his cartoons, he managed to escape to France.
