Alexander Tiranoff came from a well-known Russian family of painters. He probably emigrated after the Russian revolution and first went to France and then to the United States. The family gained some fame in the yellow press, when his son, also a painter and designer, married the sister of Hollywood celebrity James Stewart (1908-1997).
