German sailor Marcus Baur partnered Philip Barth in the 49er skiff class at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and finished a disappointing fifth, despite being clear favourites for a medal. Immediately after the Games the pair split up. Barth and Baur had won the European Championships in 1997 and 1999 and were runners-up at the Worlds in 2000.
Baur then partnered with Max Groy and again won the Europeans in 2003, and also the German national title. At the Athens Olympics in 2004 the two men disappointed, and placed only ninth. Nevertheless, Baur was regarded as one of the most successful German 49er sailors. By profession, Baur became a graduated architect and entrepreneur, developing several software products and services for German sailing teams. From 2017-20 he was executive producer of the Olympic Sailing World Cups.
