Biography

Mainly a backstroke swimmer, Markus Rogan became a four-time Olympian and one of the best-ever Austrian swimmers. In 2000, at Sydney, he was eliminated in the heats over 100 and 200 metres backstroke, but at Athens he won a silver medals in each of those events, which were the first Austrian swimming medals since 1912. At Beijing in 2008 Rigan placed an unfortunate fourth over 200 metres backstroke and won the B-final over 100 metres.

With the 4x200 metres freestyle relays Rogan came ninth in 2008 and 16th in 2012, the same as in the 200 metres IM. At short-course European Championships Rogan won five golds, four silvers, and one bronze medal and at the Europeans, added four golds, six silvers, and three bronzes.

At World Championships Rogan won one gold, four silvers and one bronze at the Short-Course Worlds and two more silvers and one bronze at the Worlds.

Rogan was elected Austrian Sportsperson of the Year in 2004, and in 2012 was Flagbearer at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics. He later moved with his wife and his children to the USA where he worked as a self-employed physiotherapist in Los Angeles.

Personal Bests: 200 m freestyle – 1:48.82 (2011); 100 m backstroke – 53.33 (2009); 200 m backstroke – 1:55.49 (2008); 200 m IM – 1:57.74 (2011).
