Andrew Ilie was an Australian tennis player who played professionally from 1994 to 2003. Ilie achieved a career-best singles ranking of #38 in the world in May 2000 and a doubles ranking of #296 in the world in June 2000. Born in București in 1976, he left Romania with his family when he was 10-years-old, spending the next year in a refugee camp in Austria. Eventually he arrived in Australia where he began his love of tennis, reaching the final of the Australian Open boys’ singles before turning professional.
Despite only winning two ATP singles titles during his career Ilie was a fan-favourite after playing adventurous shots. His best Grand Slam performances came at the Australian Open where he reached the fourth round on two occasions (1999, 2001). In 2000 he played in the singles at the Sydney Olympics, but lost in straight sets to Fernando Vicente.
