Pete Sampras had been the top player in the world for over 6 years, but had not played as well in 2000, and did not enter the Olympic tournament, which was marked by most of the seeded players losing early on. The final matched Germany’s Tommy Haas and Russia’s Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Kafelnikov had a good record in Australia, having won the 1999 Australian Open and losing in the final of that event earlier in 2000. The final match was the longest ever Olympic final, taking 3 hours and 35 minutes for Kafelnikov to prevail, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
