Although not very experienced in bobsleigh, restaurant owner George Niels joined Max Houben’s bobsleigh crew for the 1948 Winter Olympics. The Belgians were back in fourth place after three out of four runs, but they won the final descent to move up to second place and take home the silver. Niels later emigrated to the United States, where he lived in Miami, Florida.
