Yevgeny Redkin, a relatively unknown young biathlete from Belarus, surprised everyone by winning the 20 km event at the 1992 Winter Olympics. Before 1992 Redkin had won both the 15 km and relay at the 1990 World Junior Championships and after the Winter Olympics won a gold in the team event at the 1992 World Championships. After his great 1992 season, Redkin continued to compete for a few more seasons, but with less success. He won a bronze in the relay at the 1994 European Championships and his best individual place at the World Championships was 28th at 10 km in 1993. Later Redkin moved back to his birthplace of Khanty-Mansiysk, Siberia, where he worked as a sports administrator, and as the director of the biathlon complex in Khanty-Mansiysk.
