Don Ross played for Roseau High School, leading them to Minnesota High School Championships in 1958 and 1959, and an undefeated season in 1958-59. He later played for four years at the University of North Dakota. In addition to his Olympic appearances in 1964 and 1968, Ross skated for US Teams at the 1966, 1967, and 1971 World Championships, and the B Worlds in 1970. He played mostly for the US National Team, but was with Klagenfurter AC in Austria from 1971-73.
