A Royal Marines reservist at the time, John Glavin was a reserve for the 1968 Olympic Great Britain canoeing squad. He was, however, called into the squad and progressed to the K-1 semi-final where he finished fifth. It was unfortunate for Glavin that all three eventual medallists, Mihály Hesz, Aleksandr Shaparenko, and Erik Hansen, were in the same semi-final heat. By profession, Glavin was a London butcher, and he only joined the world of competitive canoeing late, at the age of 21.
