Martin Ulrich played ice hockey as defenseman for Austria at the 1994 Lillehammer, 1998 Nagano, and 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. The team was eliminated in the group stage in 1994 and finally placed 12th, losing the match for place 11 to Norway 3-1. Four years later at Nagano they again placed last and 14th, and in 1992 finished 12th out of 14. Ulrich won 149 international caps and scored 41 points (10+31).
On club level, Ulrich played in Austria with Wiener (Vienna) EV, EC Graz, and CE Wien (Vienna), before moving to Germany playing with Adler Mannheim, Berlin Capitals, and Düsseldorfer EG Metro Stars. Returning to Austria, he played with EC Red Bull Salzburg, and EK Zell am See. With Adler Mannheim he won the German national title in 1997 and 1998, and with EC Red Bull Salzburg he added Austrian titles in 2007 and 2008.
After 22 years as a professional ice hockey player Ulrich retired in 2009. He eventually took over the U-18 national team of Austria as head coach.
