East German bobsledder Roland Wetzig won a bronze medal at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics in the four-man bob as a rider together with Horst Schönau, brakeman Andreas Kirchner and Detlef Richter. Four years later he won a gold medal in the same event with Kirchner, pilot Wolfgang Hoppe and Dietmar Schauerhammer. This bob was elected 1984 team of the year in the former GDR. At the World Championships Wetzig added two silvers (1982, 1985) and one bronze medal (1980), while at the European Championships he won another gold (1987) and a bronze medal (1981), all in four-man bobs.
Wetzig started his career as a discus thrower with a personal best of 54.04 m (1979) but changed to bobsledding in 1979. He was educated as an automotive repairer and became an army officer in the NVA (Nationale Volksarmee).
