Darrin Steele was a bobsled slider who competed at the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics. Steele’s twin brother, Dan, was also on TeamUSA at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. Darrin Steele was a decathlete in college at Eastern Illinois University. He won a bronze medal in the decathlon at the 1993 World University Games, and was a silver medalist at the 1999 CISM (Conseil International du Sport Militaire) Championships. Steele placed fifth at the NCAA Meet as a junior, in 1991. He also competed at the 1996 US Olympic Trials in the decathlon, but dropped out after three events. Steele continued competing in the decathlon through 2000, after he had started his bobsled career.
After earning his degree at Eastern Illinois, Steele earned an MBA in 2011 from U Cal Berkeley, a sports leadership certificate from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, and a PhD in leadership, research, and policy from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. He taught for a time at U Colorado at the Springs and at Pikes Peak Community College, but in 2007 was made CEO of USA Bobsled & Skeleton, a position he held into the late 2010s. He also served as a vice-president of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF).
