Dan Steele competed in the four-man bobsleigh at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, winning a bronze medal. Steele became interested in bobsleigh because of his track background. He competed in the 400 hurdles and decathlon at Eastern Illinois University and placed eighth in the decathlon at the 1999 World Championships. He won a silver medal at the 1999 Pan-American Games in the deca, and then finished fifth at the 2000 USA Olympic Trials.
Steele later became a track coach at Northern Iowa and Iowa State. He then coached both Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen at the University of Oregon. In 2017 Steele suffered a near-fatal stroke but hoped to return to coaching eventually. His twin brother Darrin also competed in the decathlon and was a two-time Olympian (1998, 2002) in bobsledding.
