Aegina is one of the Saronic Islands, situated in the Aegean Sea, some 30 km southwest of Athens. It is named for Aegina, the mother of mythical king Aeacus, grandmother of the hero Peleus, and great-grandmother of Achilles. Best known ancient Olympian from the island was Marcus Aurelius Agathopous, two-time winner of the stadion race.
