Kyrgyzstan (KGZ)

Several Kyrgyz athletes competed from 1952-1988 for the Soviet Union, and Kyrgyz athletes were present at Barcelona in 1992 as members of the Unified Team. During this time Kyrgyz athletes have won seven medals (six of them in 1980) - five gold, one silver, and one bronze. The most successful Kyrgyz was the equestrian Aleksandr Blinov, who won one gold and one silver in 1980.

Kyrgyzstan’s National Olympic Committee was formed in 1991 shortly after the break-up of the Soviet Union. It was provisionally recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1992 and full recognition followed in 1993. Kyrgyzstan’s first Olympic appearance as an independent nation occurred in 1994 at Lillehammer, represented by biathlete Yevgeniya Roppel. They have since competed at every Olympic Games through 2021 and every Olympic Winter Games through 2022.

The athletes from Kyrgyzstan have won seven medals, but none are gold. Their best results came from three silver medals, all in wresting: Kanat Begaliyev in 2008 wrestling silver class, Aysuluu Tynybekova in 2020 women’s freestyle middleweight class, and Akzhol Makhmudov in 2020 men’s Greco-Roman middleweight class.

Kyrgyzstan has not yet won a medal at the Olympic Winter Games, although they have competed eight times, from 1994 to 2022, consecutively. Kyrgyzstan has been represented by athletes competing in four Winter disciplines – Alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, and ski jumping.
