Montenegrin athletes competed for Yugoslavia and, later, Serbia and Montenegro. They had won medals mostly in team sports: basketball, football, handball, volleyball and water polo. The country seceded from Serbia in late 2006, and was elected into the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 6 July 2007 at the IOC Session in Guatemala. It has since competed at all Olympic and Olympic Winter Games.
The Montenegrin women’s handball team won the nation’s first medal, losing only the gold medal match to Norway, 26-23, in the 2012 tournament.
Montenegro has competed at the Olympic Winter Games since 2010, with seven Winter Olympians (four men and three women). Five of these have competed in Alpine skiing, while Marija Bulatović and Aleksandar Grbović competed in cross-country skiing in 2018 and 2022, respectively. Their best Winter Olympic finish has been a 38th finish, by Tarik Hadžić in 2014 men’s slalom.
