Monaco first competed at the 1920 Olympic Games, and has since missed only the Games of 1932 (although they had art entrants that year), 1956, and 1980.
No Monegasque athlete has won a medal in a sporting event, but, in 1924, Julien Médécin won a bronze medal in the architecture portion of the now-defunct Art Contests. In the sporting events, Monaco’s best results have come in the sport of judo, with Yann Siccardi (in the 2012 men’s extra-lightweight class) and Cédric Bessi (in the 2020 men’s lightweight class) both finishing equal ninth.
Since first competing at the Olympic Winter Games in 1984, they have been represented at each of the subsequent Winter Olympics. The country was represented in the bobsleigh events by Albert, Prince Grimaldi of Monaco, an International Olympic Committee (IOC) Member and the son of Rainier III Prince of Monaco and Princess Grace. Prince Albert competed five times in bobsleigh, in 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998, and 2002.
Monaco has had Winter Olympians competing in Alpine skiing, bobsleigh, cross country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, and skeleton, with their best finish coming in 2006 two-man bobsleigh, in which Jérémy Bottin and Patrice Servelle placed 12th. Gilbert Bessi rode bobsleigh alongside Prince Albert in 1988, 1992, 1994, and 1998; Bessi also competed at the Summer Olympics, in the 100 metre dash at Seoul 1988.
In 1993, the Olympic Committee of Monaco was awarded with the Olympic Cup.
