The two Olympic archery events, men’s and women’s individual, were contested at a temporary archery range set up at El Dorado Regional Park, in Long Beach, California. El Dorado Park was built by the city of Long Beach in 1968 and continues to be used for recreation. The park has multiple areas for usage, including a spacious community center, night-lighted basketball and volleyball courts, softball and soccer fields, skate park, six group picnic sites available for reservation, a disc golf course, a tennis center, an 18-hole golf course, playground equipment, and multiple duck ponds.
Bhutan made its Olympic début in 1984, entering six archers, three men and three women. Archery is the national sport of Bhutan and, until 2008, the nation would compete at the Olympics only in this sport. One would have to wait until London 2012 to see a Bhutanese Olympian in a sport other than archery, in that occasion the shooter Kunzang Choden in the women’s air rifle.
