With the handball field size remaining the same as in 1988 (12 male teams, 8 female), there were changes in the format. The men’s competition now had semi-finals, giving the second-placed teams an opportunity to make the final, although this did not actually happen. On the women’s end, the final round-robin pool was replaced with knock-out rounds: semi-finals and a final round.
The tournament was largely played in Granollers, a town north of Barcelona, but the final matches were held in Palau Sant Jordi on the Montjuïc, also the site of gymnastics and handball.
