One rules change occurred shortly prior to the 1992 Olympics. The fifth set was now conducted with rally scoring, meaning that teams could score points even if they were not serving. Previously, points were scored only by the serving team. In 1990, the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) introduced the annual World League Championships, which brought together most of the best teams in the world in a series of international matches.
