Trampoline was invented in the 1930s by American George Nissen. Trampoline was added to the Olympic gymnastics program for the first time in 2000, and Nissen was present to watch the competition, which he watched “with tears in his eyes.” World championships in trampoline had first been contested in 1964, and Americans dominated the event until the late 1970s. But several paralyzing spine injuries in the United States caused multiple lawsuits and the sport lost popularity. By 2000, trampoline was led by Europeans and the former Soviet republics. The 2000 Olympic program consisted of individual events for men and women. At the world championships, there have been four different events (in various years) for men and women – individual, synchro, double mini, and tumbling.
