Volleyball had changed by 2000. The old system of matches played to sets of 15, with points only scored by the serving team (except in the fifth set since 1992), had been replaced by sets played to 25, with rally scoring, in which either team could score points. The fifth set, if necessary, would be played only to 15 points. Also, a new position – libero – had been added. This was a purely defensive spot, which could be changed without notifying the referee.
