Sailing at the 2004 Summer Olympics

There were again 11 events, as in 2000, but gender segregation was increasing, with four events each for men and women, and only three mixed events. The mixed Soling class was discontinued after 2000, replaced by Yngling as a three-person keelboat event for women, while Star was converted to a men only class in 2004. There were 16 races in the Skiff class, with 11 in all the other events. The 2004 Olympic sailing events were held just off the coast of Athina, at the Agios Kosmas Olympic Sailing Centre, which was finished only a few weeks before the Olympics started.

The scoring system was the pure point-for-place scoring system in each race that had been introduced in 1996, but in 2004, it reverted to discarding only one score, rather than two. If a boat did not finish, was disqualified, or did not start a race, it was awarded points equal to the number of boats entered in the event, plus one, or the highest score possible.

The 11 events were won by nine different nations with Brazil and Great Britain winning two each. Great Britain also won the most sailing medals, with five, followed by Spain, with three, and seven nations that each won two.
