Ice hockey was one of the two winter sports (with figure skating) that had already been part of the Olympics prior to 1924. As World Championships had not yet been established, it marked only the second international encounter between North America and Europe. European Championships had been held since 1910, Sweden being the 1923 champion.
The 1924 Olympic hockey matches were well-attended, compared to the other competitions. Almost half of the 10,000 paying spectators saw a hockey match.
