The Olympic hockey matches were played in Lillehammer and Gjøvik. The main rink was named Håkons Hall in Lillehammer. It has since hosted both handball and ice hockey competition. The Fjelhall in Gjøvik was notable for having been carved out of a mountain, and has been the largest cavern hall in the world since its opening in 1993. The format was exactly the same as in 1992, with two pools of six teams, advancing four teams each into a single-elimination medal tournament.
