The equestrian events of the 2012 London Olympics were held in the middle of the city in Greenwich Park. A 23,000 seat temporary arena built in the shadow of the National Maritime Museum hosted the show jumping and dressage while the cross-country phase of eventing wound through the rest of the 600-year-old royal park.
Team and individual eventing competitions were held in London, and they were conducted simultaneously. The cross-country phase was again conducted in the short format that had been introduced at the 2004 Olympics with the abolition of the steeplechase and “roads and tracks” phases. Michael Jung won the individual title and led Germany to the team gold medal. Jung would return in 2016 to defend his gold medal.
