Skeleton at the 2010 Winter Olympics

The controversy in the luge event spilled over to the skeleton when questions over the safety of the course were raised. Nevertheless, with additional safety features added to the course, the events went ahead. For the first time the skeleton competition comprised four runs over two days. The Canadians, on home soil, felt they could take both gold medals, but in the end they won the men’s event, with the women’s gold medal going to Great Britain, the first time they had won a skeleton gold medal and continuing a remarkable run of winning an Olympic medal each year skeleton events have been contested at the Olympic Winter Games. Germany, Latvia and Russia won their first ever medals in this sport. There were complaints from other nations that Canada had limited training runs in Whistler, while giving their own sliders unlimited access to the runs.
