Basketball at the 2024 Summer Olympics

Dates 27 July – 11 August 2024
Medal Events 2
Venues Bercy Arena, Bercy, France / Pierre Mauroy Stadium, Villeneuve-d'Ascq, France

Men’s and women’s basketball was held at two stadiums, with the group matches contested at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium, in Villeneuve d’Ascq, a suburb of Lille in the Nord department of France. The knockout rounds were played at the Bercy Arena, in the 12th arrondissement of Paris.

The biggest story entering the 2024 Olympic Games was if the United States could continue its long winning streaks in basketball. The USA women had won every gold medal since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and were looking to win their eighth consecutive Olympic title, which would be a record for any Olympic team sport. The United States men had won gold medals in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020, and were looking for their fifth consecutive Olympic victory.

In the end, the USA teams continued their winning streaks, taking both gold medals, but they were pushed in doing so. Both teams faced France, supported by the home crowds, in the gold medal matches, and both matches were desperately close, but the USA teams managed to pull out victories.

There were slight changes in the format of the competitions. There were 12 men’s teams, as there had been at every Olympics since 1976, but previously these were always separated into two groups of six teams for group play. At Paris 2024, this was changed into three groups of four teams, which required all teams to play fewer games. The format was the same for the women, who have had 12 teams in the sport since 1996, but also always with two groups of six in the past.
