The favorites were the United States’ team, which had won the last four gold medals and had won 16 of the previous 20 gold medals in the sport. The USA had a full team of NBA players, led by LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Steph Curry. They were coached by Steve Kerr, long-time coach of the Golden State Warriors. The USA was no longer so dominant that other teams rolled over for them, with Germany, the 2023 World Cup champion, and Spain both expected to challenge for the gold medal. France was hoping for medals from their men’s team, which had won silver at Tokyo 2020, and defeated the United States in a group stage match.
The United States, Germany, and Canada led the groups, all going unbeaten and advancing to the quarter-finals. The USA crushed Brazil in the quarters, 122-87, with Germany winning easily over Greece. France defeated Canada to advance to the semi-finals, along with Serbia.
Serbia gave all the United States could handle in the semi-finals, leading for much of the last two periods, but in the end, the USA pulled out the victory, 95-91. The other semi was just as close, with host nation France defeating Germany 73-69. Serbia would win the bronze medal, defeating Germany 93-83.
The United States was favored in the gold medal match and France was supported by the home crowd and led for much of the final periods. France had nobody to contain Steph Curry, however, the consensus greatest outside shooter of all-time. With the match on the line, Curry hit four three-pointers in the last few minutes, despite France knowing he was going to shoot and defending him well. The final dagger was absurd, with two French defenders draped over him, but he hit a 9-metre fallaway three to seal the victory, as the United States pulled away to win by 11, 98-87, for their fifth consecutive gold medal and 17th in the sport.
