In 2021, Charlotte Worthington (GBR) and Logan Martin (AUS) won the first-ever Olympic gold medals in BMX Freestyle Park at Tokyo 2020.
In the sports’ second Olympic appearance at Paris 2024, the event featured 24 riders - three more than Tokyo in both the women’s and men’s competitions -, competing at Place de la Concorde on 30-31 July 2024. The venue also hosted skateboarding, 3x3 basketball, and breaking. These newer Olympic sports drew in younger athletes and lots of fans, with high ticket sales showing their popularity.
The 2024 BMX Freestyle Olympic qualification system awarded 12 spots (six men, six women), different from Tokyo 2020, to the top six riders of each gender in the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS). The remaining Paris 2024 slots were based on results from the 2022 UCI Urban World Championships (Abu Dhabi) and 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships (Glasgow), with nations from five continents represented.
The rider’s two-run scores were averaged in the qualification round to give a total qualification score which was used to determine the start order of the cyclists in the final, providing a knowledge advantage to the later riders. In the final, only the better score of the two runs counts.
The top nine cyclists advanced to the final with the best-ranked rider from the qualification starting last.
