Mountain bike cycling remained in the format that it had when it débuted at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, with a single cross-country event each for men and women. The events were held on the man-made mountain biking course at Colline d’Élancourt, about 30 kilometres (18 miles) southwest of Paris. This provided a 4.4 kilometres course, with eight laps for the men, and seven laps for the women.
Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock defended his Olympic title, with Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (FRA) winning gold in front of a partisan crowd.
