Founded as the Amateur-Athletik Weltunion in 1905, which governed both weightlifting and wrestling. In 1912, it took the name Internationaler Weltverband für Schwerathletik, changing to Internationaler Amateur-Weltverband für Schwerathletik only one year later (1913). In 1920 the weightlifting and wrestling federations separated and this group became the Fédération Internationale de Poids et Halteres. It became the Fédération Haltérophile International (FHI) in the 1920s until 1972, when it took the English version of the name as the International Weightlifting Federation.
