France had swept all the men’s team titles at the 1999 World Championships but their foil team nearly crashed out of the Sydney Olympics at the first hurdle. Trailing Cuba 35-30 they rebounded to take a 45-43 victory. A more straightforward win over Poland in the semi-final brought them up against China in the final. The gold medal match was a repeat of the last World Championship final where France had won on a controversial call with the scores tied at 44-44. After a final where the lead at regular intervals the two teams found themselves level with only a single hit needed to win. This time there was no complaint from the Chinese as Patrice Lhôtellier scored a clear winner to seal the Olympic title for France. Italy claimed the final place on the podium.
