Format	Scoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall (win by fall-0; win by decision-1; draw-2; loss by decision-3; loss by fall-4). Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler. When three or fewer wrestlers remained, they advanced to a final round, with preliminary results carried forward.

The favorite was Soviet Aleksandr Medved, the 1962-63 World Champion, although still also highly considered was the redoubtable Iranian Gholam Reza Takhti, the 1956 gold medalist and 1960 silver medalist. Takhti was eliminated after round five, with Medved joining Bulgarian Said Mustafov and Turkey’s Ahmet Ayık in the final round. Ayık and Mustafov had already fought to a draw in round one and Ayık and Medved had drawn in round three. When he pinned Mustafov in 39 seconds in the only final round match, Medved won the gold medal. This would be the first of three consecutive gold medals for Medved, who would win gold in 1968 and 1972 as a heavyweight.
