The event was considered wide-open as nobody had dominated the World Cup circuits in recent seasons. The defending champion, Qi Guangpu, had won a pair of World Cup medals in the 2025/26 season, while two-time World Champion Noé Roth had won one. China looked especially formidable as Sun Jiaxu, Wang Xindi, and Li Tianma had all won World Cup events this season.
The qualifying was scheduled for 17 February but was postponed until 19 February because of snow, and then again until 20 February because of further adverse weather. Swiss Pirmin Werner led qualifying as the 12 finalists came from only five nations: China (4), USA (3), Canada (2), Switzerland (2), and Ukraine (1).
After the first two rounds in the final, the field was narrowed down to the four Chinese skiers and the two Swiss. Wang edged out Roth to take the gold medal, 132.60 to 131.58, in the final round, as Li Tianma brought China a second skier on the podium with bronze. Wang gave China its second consecutive gold medal in the event, and they had now won a medal in the event at six consecutive Winter Olympics. Roth’s silver medal was the first for Switzerland in the event since Sonny Schönbächler won gold in the event’s medal début at Lillehammer 1994.
