Birk Ruud (NOR) was the defending gold medalist in Big Air and had already won gold in slopestyle at Livigno. He was expected to be challenged by New Zealander Luca Harrington, the 2025 World Champion who had medalled in all three World Cups in the 2025/26 and had already taken bronze behind Rudd in the slopestyle. Another favorite was American Troy Podmilsak, who had won two of the three World Cups in the current season.
All the favorites got through the qualifying, which was led by the USA’s Mac Forehand, followed by Austrian Matěj Švancer, with Rudd in third place, followed by his teammate Tormod Frostad.
Frostad had a career total of only two World Cup medals, but he had not received the memo that his teammate was supposed to win. Instead, Frostad led all three rounds of the final, scoring over 95 points on each run to take a surprising gold medal. He was followed by Forehand, who was also consistent with over 95 points on each run, but not quite enough to overtake Frostad. Behind them Švancer was also steady and took the bronze medal. Ruud had only one good run and placed ninth, as Podmilsak just missed the podium in fourth place.
This was the second time men’s Big Air was on the Winter Olympic Programme with Norway and the USA going 1-2 both times, after Ruud won in 2022 followed by Colby Stevenson.
