The ice hockey tournament at Milano Cortina 2026 was highly anticipated, with players from the National Hockey League (NHL) taking part for the first time since Sochi 2014, making this the first best-on-best tournament for 12 years. The teams of medal favourites, Canada, the United States, Sweden, and Finland consisted almost exclusively of NHL players. Twelve countries qualified, eight by IIHR rankings, three (Denmark, Slovakia and Latvia) via qualification tournaments, and Italy as hosts. France rounded out the qualifying teams by finishing second in the qualification tournaments, replacing Russia, who had been banned from international competition since 2022.

During the preliminary round, the top teams performed as expected. Slovakia surprised with their strong play, defeating Finland in their opening match in what was widely considered an upset. France and Italy also surprised by putting up respectable performances in close losses against higher-ranked teams such as Sweden, Czechia and Slovakia. The top four after the preliminary round consisted of Canada, the United States, Finland, and Slovakia; the qualification playoffs saw Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, and Czechia emerge victorious to compete in the quarterfinals.

The quarterfinals consisted of three close games requiring overtime, with Canada, Finland and the United States winning over Czechia, Switzerland, and Sweden respectively; Slovakia put up a tally of 6-2 against Germany in the other match. In the semifinals, Canada won a close game by a score of 3-2 over Finland, while the United States defeated Slovakia by a score of 6-2, setting up a championship match that many felt was inevitable from the start.

Ultimately, Slovakia fell to Finland in the bronze medal match by a score of 6-1, with the Finns earning their fifth bronze medal in the men’s ice hockey tournament since Lillehammer 1994. The highly anticipated gold medal match of Canada against the United States was held on the final day of the Games, 22 February, though Canadian captain Sidney Crosby was ruled out due to an injury sustained in the quarterfinals. The United States scored first, with a tally by Matt Boldy, which was then responded to by a goal from Canada’s Cale Makar. Despite Canada registering 42 shots to the United States’ 28, the game remained tied and required overtime to settle. Jack Hughes scored the gold medal winning goal 1:41 into the period, ending the United States’ 46-year gold medal drought at the Olympic Games, dating back to the “Miracle on Ice” team at 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck of the United States was named the best goaltender of the tournament, and teammate Quinn Hughes as best defenceman. The best forward and MVP honours went to Connor McDavid of Canada, who led the tournament with 13 points (2 goals, 11 assists) in six games.
