The men’s halfpipe event brought together one of the deepest fields in Olympic snowboarding, led by Japan’s Ayumu Hirano, Ruka Hirano and Yuto Totsuka, along with Australia’s Scotty James. Ayumu Hirano entered the Games as the defending Olympic champion, while James, Ruka Hirano and Totsuka finished 1-2-3 at the most recent World Championships. Qualification featured numerous high-scoring runs and demonstrated the exceptional depth of the field, with several athletes successfully landing tricks that would have been considered groundbreaking only a few years earlier.
The final developed into a battle between the Japanese stars and James, with Ryusei Yamada earning the highest score, a 92.00 in his first run. Totsuka and James responded in the ensuing run with a 95.00 and 93.50 respectively, which stood to earn them gold and silver, with Yamada taking the bronze and Ruka Hirano finishing a close fourth with a best run scoring 91.00.
