The United States was not close to the leading nations, trailing the Netherlands by 413 points, with their best rider, Christine Traurig, scoring less than the lowest scoring counting riders for both Germany and the Netherlands. Isabell Werth won her third consecutive gold medal and Anky van Grunsven won her third consecutive silver.
