For the first time since 1996 the Olympic tennis tournament took place without at least one of the Williams sisters in the field. The clear favourites were the top two seeds Ash Barty and the local favourite Naomi Osaka, who had the honour of lighting the Olympic Flame at the 2020 opening ceremony.
America’s 11th seed Jennifer Brady was eliminated in the first round, but the shock of the opening round was the defeat of top seed Barty by Spain’s Sara Sorribes, ranked 48th in the world. Osaka followed Barty out of the competition two rounds later when beaten by the unseeded Markéta Vondroušová. The highest ranked player left in the semi-finals was Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina (No.4), but she was beaten by Vondroušová and, in the other semi, Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic beat Yelena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.
In the bronze medal match, fourth seed Elina Svitolina beat Rybakina, and won Ukraine’s first ever Olympic tennis medal. At one stage Svitolina was a set down and 1-3 down in the second set before staging a comeback. In the third and final set, Svitolina was 1-4 down, before winning the next five games in a row to win 6-4. On her Games début at the age of 24, Belinda Bencic beat Markéta Vondroušová in three sets to become the first Swiss woman to win an Olympic tennis gold.
