This was the 20th appearance of the event, which was one of four to be held at every Summer Games since canoeing was introduced in 1936.
The reigning world champions were Liu Hao and Wang Hao of China, while the reigning Olympic champions were Sebastian Brendel and Jan Vandrey of Germany. In Tokyo, however, Brendel partnered with Tim Hecker and Liu Hao partnered with Zheng Pengfei. Isaquias Queiroz of Brazil, the silver medallist in Rio, bronze medallist at the 2019 World Championship, and 2015 World gold medallist, was also competing, with Jacky Jamael Nascimento Godmann. Making up a strong line-up was Serguey Torres and Fernando Jorge of Cuba, a three-times runner up at the World Championships (2017-19) and sixth at Rio 2016.
In the preliminaries, China, Germany, Cuba and Spain easily qualified directly to the semi-finals, while all the remaining 10 pairs had to paddle again in the quarter-finals, from which six qualified into the semi-finals. From the semis, 8 out of 10 qualified into the A Final, including all pre-race contenders. In the final run, Cuba made history by winning its first ever canoe sprint gold medal. China finished second and Germany third. It was the first medal for the 34-year-old Torres in his fourth, and probably last, Olympic appearance, whereas the 22-year-old Jorge was competing in his second Games.
