Russia was the defending gold medalist but could only be represented as the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) because of IOC restrictions. The last three World Championships had been won by Italy (2017-18) and the United States (2019), with France also highly considered as the 2016 silver medalists.
Italy was led by the 2016 individual gold medalist, Daniele Garozzo, but they were upset in the first round by Japan, who joined the favorites – France, ROC, and the USA – in the quarter-finals. Both semi-finals were close with ROC defeating the USA 45-41, and France beating Japan 45-42.
The finals, however, were not close. France crushed ROC 45-28 as France lost only one of nine matches to take gold. The bronze medal went to the United States which also won easily, 45-31, over Japan.
France’s gold medal was their eighth and their 17th medal in the event, both marks leading the medal table for men’s team foil. The United States’ bronze medal repeated their finish in the event from Rio 2016.
