Big air for men and women had made its Olympic début at PyeongChang 2018 and was being held for only the second time at the Winter Olympics. The event is an extreme form of slopestyle and had been held at the World Championships since 2003. It was a part of the World Cup circuit since 2016/17 and débuted at the X Games in 2008. Scored differently than slopestyle it consists of the best two of three runs added together for a final score.
Canada was hoping for a big event as Mark McMorris and Max Parrot had taken gold and silver, respectively at the 2021 World Championships. Parrot had won five titles in the event at the X Games while McMorris was a four-time X Games champion.
Parrot led the qualifying over Japan’s Takeru Otsuka, in his first Olympics, and American Red Gerard, the 2018 slopestyle gold medalist. McMorris struggled and finished eighth in qualifying.
American Chris Corning led the final in run one with 92.00 as McMorris and Parrot disappointed, placing eighth and ninth, respectively. In run two China’s Su Yiming, silver medalist in slopestyle a few days before, landed a second clean run to take the lead at 182.50. That would hold up for the gold medal.
Behind Su, Norway’s Mons Røisland, silver medalist at the 2021 X Games, moved into second and the Netherlands’ Niek van der Velden was third. Røisland would improve on his third run and strengthen his hold on the silver medal. Parrot hit a huge second run of 94.00 and a solid third run to take bronze. McMorris never got going and finished 10th.
Su would return at MiCo 2026 and win two more Olympic medals, with gold in slopestyle and a bronze in big air.
